How Much Did Your Frenchie’s Vaccinations Cost?

This past Saturday, we took Pound Cake in for his first Vet visit at the Turquoise Pet Hospital for his 3rd round of shots. I can’t believe how much we put him through in one day. Besides getting the vaccinations, we got him micro-chipped and some medicine for a parasite called coccidea that was found in his stool. Our vet bill was $267 dollars.

Here’s the breakdown.

Albon Oral Suspension 5% per Oz. (Medicine for Parasite) - $19.74

Examination/Office Visit - $53.00

Intestinal Parasite Exam (Float & Smear) - $42.00

Corona Vaccine #2 - $16.90

DA2LPP #3 - $26.00

Bordetella (NASAL) - $27.00

Strongid T Administration #1 - $23.50

Micro Chip - $59.00

Grand Total $267.14

Did we over pay for anything or pay for anything we didn’t need? Are these prices fair? Should we be prepared for more bills like this in the future? Does anybody have dog insurance or a cheap medical plan?

  1. A New York office visit would be $75-95 plus treatment.

I am shocked at the prices everyone pays for vet bills outside of Texas. There are some steep vets here , too, but not like other places. Office visits $30 ish, or less , 5 way shots 18 or so,,,, microchipping $15. Fecal, $20. DANG!!!

These costs are a little less than what we pay in NYC.

  4. I tried to leave this earlier, but it didn’t go through.

You didn’t just pay for ’shots’ on this visit — you also paid for a bunch of things you won’t be repeating on a regular basis, or ever again.

    Chipping — done once
Kennel Cough — shouldn’t need done for another 2 yrs or so
Treatment for coccidia — your breeder should cover this, since pup obviously came with it. Ditto the fecal.

Your next visit should be a $53 office visit, and a $26 DALPP booster. They might want to do a re worming and another fecal, because of the cocci, but that’s your call. If pup seems patently better, and you’ve given him the full course of meds, he should be fine.

    Cute boy, btw! :)

Thanks for all the input as first time dog owners we just wanted to make sure we werent getting taken advantage of. Shortly after writing this post we actually had two incidences (I’ll make sure to write about them later) with Tink and Chubs and the Turquoise animal Hospital responded so well and even follwed up multiple times to make sure everything was ok. After the impecable service we received I would never think about trading vets even if the response to this post was that were getting ripped off. I now believe finding a vet you can trust and count on is truly pricesless.

May I ask if one of those incidents included a bad reaction to the vaccinations? My Frenchie had such a bad reaction to his final vaccines that after discussing with my vet and breeder, he will only be getting core vaccinations and they will not all be done together - we’re going to split them up into one a week when he’s due next. He was in such pain and started having trouble breathing - I really thought we were going to lose him. Took forever to get him to the ER Vet!

One of the incidents in praticular did not have to do with a bad reaction to the vaccines however Chubs did have a very bad reaction to his third round of vaccines and was throwing up all over the house and stuff was even coming out of his nose it was so scary, his face really looked as if he was going to die. Our vet was actually closed since it was a Sunday but I called their 24 hour emergency clinic and was told to monitor him and it was normal to have a bad reaction to vaccines but if the vomitting continued I should bring him in. It was a very scary night and thank God he fully recovered in a couple hours however when I called Turquoise Hospital the next day they told me it was not normal and the emercency clinic should have advised us to bring Chubs in immediately. Turquoise then made a special note in Chub’s charts to be pre medicated before his next round of shots so he does not get sick again, hopefully that works because I’m not sure if I could go through the pain of seeing him sick again. Isn’t it the sadest thing in the world?

    Yes, it is. ;-(
And I don’t think I can imagine life without my Sonic.
I’m glad Chubs is okay though!

  9. Consider telling your clinic that you want to follow the Dr. Dodd’s minimal vaccine protocol –

This protocol minimizes allergic reactions, maximizes natural immunities, and avoids unnecessary inoculations.

Good luck with the pups — glad they’re both feeling better!!
